People who work in mental health and wellness spend their days holding space for other people. That is meaningful work and it is demanding. A short, regular practice of stillness is one way many clinicians look after themselves. This is not medical advice; it is an invitation to consider a habit.
Why regular beats occasional
Stillness is a skill, and like most skills, a little often works better than a lot rarely. A single hour each week, held at the same time and in the same place, becomes an anchor. You do not have to build a daily routine to benefit from a weekly one.
What clinicians often look for
Many providers describe wanting a place to put work down for an hour: to move gently, breathe and sit quietly without being the one in charge of the room. A group practice helps because someone else sets the pace and you simply take part.
Beginner friendly
You do not need to be experienced or flexible, or to have any belief in particular. Light movement followed by seated stillness is accessible to most people, and a guided session shows you how to begin.
Practice in the same building where you work
When a practice happens where you already work, it is easier to keep. There is no extra trip, and the habit attaches to your existing week. For tenants at Sharanam Center, the Sunday yoga and meditation hour is open in the same building.
A longer pause when you need it
Some seasons call for more than an hour. A full day of silence can function as a reset: a break from conversation, screens and decisions. The center’s silent retreat is a guided day for rest and clarity.
A note on limits
Meditation and gentle movement are not a substitute for supervision, consultation, therapy of your own or rest. They sit beside those supports, not in place of them. If you are struggling, reach out to a colleague, supervisor or professional of your own.
How to start
Choose a time you can keep, such as the same hour every week. Arrive a few minutes early so you are not rushed. Give it a month before you decide whether it helps. If you want to try it, ask about joining a Sunday session.
